Human Fluency
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will AI really replace my job?
A: The reality is more nuanced than simple replacement. AI excels at automating routine, predictable tasks, but it struggles with complex problem-solving, emotional intelligence, creative thinking, and nuanced human interaction. Rather than wholesale job replacement, we're seeing AI augmentation where certain tasks get automated while human skills become more valuable. The key is understanding which parts of your role are uniquely human and irreplaceable, and learning to use AI to augment your capabilities rather than compete with it.
Q: How do I know if my job is "AI-proof"?
A: No job is 100% AI-proof, but some roles are more resilient. Jobs that require uniquely human skills are harder to automate. If you are a knowledge working professional, the question isn't whether your current job will change (spoiler: it will), but whether you're developing the skills to evolve with it. This includes learning to collaborate with AI tools while strengthening uniquely human capabilities. Keeping on top of your AI literacy and technical skills will be essential in the future of work as well. The adage is true: you won't be replaced by AI, but a human who uses AI well.
Q: What do you mean by uniquely human skills?
The most AI-resistant skills fall into three categories: soft skills (communication, empathy, emotional intelligence), big picture thinking (creative, strategic, systems thinking), and social power skills (judgment, influence, trust-building) - all of which require uniquely human capabilities that AI cannot replicate. I go into more detail on this Substack post 'Developing your Human Fluency' [yes, it's also the name of my company].
Q: I'm overwhelmed by AI developments. Where do I even start?
A: The first is to build your foundational knowledge, about generative AI and how they work. Then experiment with LLMs and AI-enabled apps. Then hone your AI skills by going deeper into understanding the technology. And then keep on top of it as AI is moving at such pace. Trying to understand understand every AI development is like drinking from a fire hose. The goal is building confidence through small wins, not becoming an AI expert overnight. For a more detailed guide where I walk you through step by step, check out my Substack post 'Where to properly start with AI'.
Q: What's the difference between AI automation, AI augmentation and AI Agents?
A: These represent three different ways AI integrates into work, each with distinct implications for your role. AI automation replaces human tasks entirely - like automatically categorising emails or processing invoices without any human involvement. AI augmentation works alongside you as a collaborative partner. Think using ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas while you provide the strategic direction and final decisions. AI Agents are autonomous systems that can complete multi-step workflows independently. They are like an AI assistant that can research a topic, create a presentation, schedule meetings, and send follow-up emails based on a single request.
The key difference is the level of human involvement: AI automation removes you from the process, AI augmentation enhances your capabilities, and AI Agents act as intelligent delegates who can handle complex tasks with minimal supervision. Most successful AI implementations combine all three approaches strategically: automating routine work, augmenting creative and strategic thinking, and deploying Agents for complex but well-defined workflows. Understanding these distinctions helps you identify which parts of your role are suitable for each approach and where your unique human judgment remains irreplaceable.
Q: Should I learn to code to work with AI?
A: Not necessarily. While basic technical literacy is helpful, you don't need to become a programmer. More important is developing "AI fluency", understanding what AI can and cannot do, how to communicate effectively with AI tools, and how to integrate AI capabilities into your existing expertise. Experiment with vibe-coding, try new AI-enabled apps, and intentionally reflect on how you can use AI in your work. Focus on becoming an expert user rather than a developer, unless coding aligns with your career goals.
Q: What's the biggest career mistake people are making with AI?
A: Either ignoring AI completely or trying to compete with it directly. The biggest mistake is waiting for the "AI wave" to pass. It won't. Equally problematic is trying to do everything AI can do, but manually. The strategic approach is learning to leverage AI, not just for productivity gains but for growth and innovation. Understanding where AI excels and where you (the human) does, then orchestrating both toward better outcomes will be the fundamental skill over the next 5 years as we move through the AI transition.
About AI Transformation
Q: Why do so many enterprise AI initiatives fail?
A: Most AI initiatives fail because they focus on technology implementation rather than human augmentation and redesigning work to make the most of AI. Companies often invest heavily in AI capabilities but underestimate the organisational transformation and change management required to help people actually use and benefit from this technology. Success requires addressing fears, building new workflows, developing new skills, and fundamentally rethinking how work gets done, not just deploying new software.
Q: What's the role of leadership in AI transformation?
A: Leaders need to model AI collaboration focused on growth and innovation, rather than AI replacement thinking that is focused solely on productivity gains. This means being transparent about what AI can and cannot do, investing in human skill development alongside AI implementation, and creating psychological safety for experimentation and learning. The most successful AI transformations are led by executives who see AI as amplifying human potential rather than reducing headcount.
Q: How long does meaningful AI transformation take?
A: Longer than you think. Meaningful transformation (in larger organisations), before AI, typically takes 12-24 months. With generative AI, seeing the benefits could take even longer. Changing human behavior and organisational culture takes time. Quick wins can happen in weeks or months, but sustainable transformation requires building new habits, developing new competencies, and shifting mindsets at both individual and organisational levels.
Q: What's the biggest mistake companies make when implementing AI?
A: I see three mistakes: 1) Companies are treating AI implementation like traditional technology deployment. AI requires a fundamentally different approach because it changes how people think and work, not just what tools they use. 2) Leaders are applying the same ROI metrics to AI investments. Most are looking for short-term quick productivity gains (i.e. headcount savings) only, rather than considering the long-term growth and innovation potential. And 3) People are severely under-investing in the people aspects of an AI initiative. The technology should be half the spend: equal investment should be allocated for skills development, work re-design, change management, etc.
Building AI Organisations - OD Upskilling
Q: Is this just about using AI tools, or something deeper?
A: This upskilling focuses on the future of work and fundamental organisation redesign in the AI era. Whilst we'll cover AI tools that can enhance your work, the emphasis is on rethinking how work gets done and how to design organisations that thrive with AI and make the most of both human and AI capabilities.
Q: What if my organisation hasn't started implementing AI yet?
A: Perfect timing. It's much easier to design AI-forward from the beginning than to retrofit later. You'll learn how to build the right foundation from the ground up, and help your company's leadership drive a sustainable AI future for your organisation.
Q: Can this be customised for our specific industry or framework?
A: Absolutely. I am happy to adapt the 'Building AI Organisations' to your specific industry context and preferred internal operating model framework. Note that pricing will be dependent on the level of customisation required.
Q: Do you provide ongoing support after the upskilling session?
A: Yes, optional fractional advisory, consulting and expertise coaching support is available to help implement the frameworks and approaches covered in the session. I can also help and support your OD team with a specific project / initiative in your organisation apply the learning in practice.
